
The Faculty of Engineering & Information Technologies at the University of Sydney will offer the Dr Abdul Kalam International Postgraduate Tuition Fee Scholarships. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India. During his five years in office, Dr Abdul Kalam’s focus was on transforming India into a developed nation by 2020. A distinguished scientist and aeronautical engineer by training, Dr Kalam advocates that is possible to work cooperatively for an economically developed, prosperous and peaceful society.
In recognition of his contribution to his profession, Dr Kalam was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Sydney in May 2011. The Dr Abdul Kalam International Scholarships celebrate his commitment to education, and his endeavours to support outstanding students to develop as future leaders. 5 scholarships will be available for postgraduate coursework programs in Engineering and Information Technologies.
Terms and Conditions
I. The Scholarship shall be open to all international applicants who have a firm offer for a Master coursework program. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of a minimum high distinction average as indicated by the applicant’s performance in their undergraduate degree. Students who have already commenced their postgraduate studies, or students transferring from other postgraduate programs are not eligible.
II. The Scholarship shall be tenable in the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technologies and shall not be transferable.
III. The Scholarship shall be tenable for one year only regardless if the Master program entered is structured for more than 1 year. It will also be subject to the Scholarship recipient meeting all the obligations of the program, and subject to academic progress being deemed satisfactory by The University of Sydney.
IV. The Scholarship shall be valued at 50% of the tuition fees for the program and year selected. The student must be enrolled full-time in the Master program, commencing in either semester 1 or semester 2, and will be paid in two instalments, after acceptance of offer for the semester of entry and after achieving a minimum credit average in four completed units of study in the first semester of entry.
V. In the event of a scholar leaving the program for any reason and not completing the postgraduate program, the recipient may be required to pay back any monies received in the year of discontinuation. This will be subject to the discretion of the Associate Dean, Education.
VI. The recipient may not be entitled to a ‘Leave of Absence’ during the duration of the scholarship, unless it is due to extenuating circumstances. This will be at the discretion of the Associate Dean, Education.
VII. The recipient must not be in receipt of any other tuition scholarship from the University of Sydney.
VIII. The scholarship may not be deferred to another semester or year.
IX. The recipient will be required to pay for their own airfares to Sydney, living expenses, study materials, text books, any ancillary fees (if applicable) and Overseas Health Cover each year.
X. The recipient will be responsible for paying the balance of the tuition fees while enrolled in the program.
XI. The recipient will be required to enrol as a full time international student and must retain their international student status on a full time basis throughout their enrolment at the University of Sydney.
The Scholarship may be suspended or withdrawn should the Scholar fail to comply with any of the Terms and Conditions outlined above.
Selection Criteria
- Selection will be based strictly on academic merit and English language proficiency as per the University’s admission requirements.
- Only applicants with firm, unconditional offers of admission will be considered.
- Selection will be made by the Faculty Selection Panel which will include the Associate Dean Education, Associate Dean International, International Marketing Manager and Manager of the Graduate School of Engineering & IT. Their decision will be final with no appeals entertained.
- Successful candidates will be informed in December for semester 1 of the following year and June for semester 2.
