BAYERBoost aims to give Year 12 and 13 secondary school students and tertiary undergraduate students experience in environmental research or restoration during their summer break while at the same time providing financial support up to $6,000 for further study. It is funded by Bayer New Zealand and administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand.
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or Permanent residents or have a permanent humanitarian visa and be aged 24 or under at the time of applying.
The objective of the scheme is to foster and support, in young New Zealanders, an understanding and awareness of New Zealand's unique environments and the issues surrounding the environment. It is planned to achieve this objective by enabling young New Zealanders to:
experience the application and use of science and technology in environmental studies;
gain experience in working with an accredited organisation involved in research or action for the environment;
recognise environmental studies as rewarding and worthwhile career options; and
enhance understanding of, and the positive attitudes to, science and technology.
BAYERBoost Scholarships are available for the summer vacation period, i.e. from 6-12 weeks to enable students to engage in practical work with host organisations in a specific environmental project. Interested students should apply with a proposed host organisation and project to the Royal Society selection panel. Scholarships will be awarded to those applicants and projects deemed to be most worthy.
Each scholarship will be worth:
$6,000 for a tertiary student who will be required to work for 12 weeks over the summer vacation,
$5,000 for a Year 13 student who will be required to work for 10 weeks,
$3,000 for a Year 12 student who will be required to work for 6 weeks.
Interested students should contact an organisation which could host them for the stated period and establish a project for their scholarship. This need not be a separate, discrete piece of work; they may simply join a team already working on a particular project. A list of possible host organisations and projects are available on the BAYERBoost website: www.BAYERBoost.co.nz. This list is neither exhaustive nor exclusive, and students may well find other organisations which would be acceptable as hosts and come up with their own ideas for projects.
Scholarship guidelines, application forms and academic reference form are available on the website www.BAYERBoost.co.nz.
Please note that applications will only be considered if accompanied by the necessary documentation (as stated in the guidelines), which includes a project proposal. Two academic references are required and must be sent directly to the Royal Society by the referees.
The entire application must be received at the Royal Society of New Zealand, 4 Halswell Street, P O Box 598, Wellington by 5.00 pm Tuesday 30 September 2010.
No late applications will be accepted.
